The start of the holiday season means the countdown to the end of the fall semester for students at the University of South Florida.
But after just a few short weeks, USF students will find themselves back in session with the start of the Spring 2023 semester. To ensure students have the critical dates in mind for spring and summer 2023 at the University of South Florida, here’s a rundown of what you need to know to prepare for the upcoming terms at USF.
Winter break at the University of South Florida runs from Thursday, December 8th, through Monday, January 9th. Fall 2023 classes end on Friday, December 2nd and final exams start the next day, with no in-between period to jump-start studying. Final exams at USF run from December 3rd – 8th, but individual schedules will vary by course, and not all students will need to remain on campus through the 8th to complete their finals.
Fall semester grades must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by December 13th, and students can view their grades on their OASIS portal on December 16th.
Commencement for Fall 2022 graduates takes place from December 9th – 11th. Students taking one of the intensive Winter Intersession courses will be in class from December 12th – January 6th, with days off for Christmas and New Year’s.
The Spring 2023 semester at the University of South Florida begins on Monday, January 9th.
Students have the first week to finalize their spring semester schedule; the last day to add or drop courses for the Spring 2023 term is Friday, January 13th. This is also the date by which students must make their semester tuition payments and the last day to submit residency reclassification documents for the Spring 2023 semester, which may impact tuition rates.
The University of South Florida considers a student full-time when enrolled in at least 12 credit hours worth of courses. For most students, this averages to about four classes per semester. Still, some degree programs, especially those with laboratory hours, may require more than 12 credit hours at some time during a given semester.
Students may need to maintain full-time status with at least 12 credit hours of courses as part of a scholarship or grant program. Any financial awards offered directly from USF are prorated based on the number of enrolled hours per semester.
Students are advised to confirm their departmental requirements and any scholarship or grant requirements before registering for classes for the upcoming semester to ensure they are on track to graduate. The Office of Financial Aid has information available for students on credit requirements per aid type.
Yes, USF has a spring break. For the Spring 2023 semester, spring break runs from Monday, March 13th, through Sunday, March 19th.
The one-week off classes is typical for most universities, and this week aligns with most other national universities’ spring break dates.
Shortly after spring break, registration opens for both summer session and Fall 2023 classes, giving students little time to get back into the swing of their academic schedules. These open for USF students on March 27th.
Yes, most courses at the University of South Florida have some midterm exams or projects, but this varies by class.
Typically midterms take place the week before spring break to give students a sense of their academic standing midway through the semester.
The week after spring break is the last week students can withdraw from a Spring semester course without an academic penalty, although they will still be charged tuition for the credit hours. The last day to withdraw is March 25th.
The last day of Spring 2023 classes at USF is April 28th. This is earlier than at most universities but allows for more time in May for summer courses.
Final exams for the Spring 2023 semester at USF take place from May 1st – 4th, which mark the end of the spring term. Commencement for those students graduating in 2023 will occur from May 5th – 8th.
